Maintain the health of a tree prior to
moving. This will include: watering, fertilizing, canopy pruning
and root pruning. When moving a very large tree, this preparation
work may start two years prior
to a move.
Two business days prior to moving, give the tree a thorough watering. The tree
branches are tied up to prevent breakage.
The right size of tree spade must be used to be successful. Big trees need
big spades. A bigger spade means greater chance of success. At Spruce Hill
Tree Movers
we have a 98% success rate with our tree moves. The industry standard is 12
inches of
spade for every inch of tree (measure about 4 feet from the ground). Since
the
105 inch tree mover is the largest one to travel down the road while carrying
a tree, this rule is sometimes stretched in an attempt to save a valuable or
sentimental tree.
The bottom of the hole is filled with water and a loam slurry
(shredded loam, bone meal, fertilizer and water).
Tree is placed in the hole and the slurry fills up any air gaps around
the root ball.
With oversized trees we excavate 20 inches deep and 60 inches around
the outer edge of the root ball. New gardening soil is then put in. This
gives the roots
a fertile place to grow into.
A 6 inch berm is formed around the outer edge of the new excavated area. This
new area is entirely mulched (4 inches).
Stake the tree 2/3 of the way up (#9 wire and hose) Place stakes 2 feet away
from the excavated area.
Finally water, water, water!
